A must read for any person interested in India. Written by
non-Indian author born in India and considering India her home. M.M. Kaye's
works are filled with love and honesty about India and have the ability
to draw the reader into the Indian world. At its heart it is a love story
between a British soldier and an Indian Princess but it is so packed with
adventure and cultural lessons that one can not classify it as a romance novel.
It touches on many Indian subjects such as caste, suttee (the burning of widows),
royal polygamy, dowry, and Afghanistan which was once a part of India
